Sculpting putties

How to convert or sculpt a miniature? How to make a decent base or even a full diorama?!

Sculpting putties

Post by Pandadosmares »

Well i think we are in need of some opinions about putties and what do they give and where to use them, so heres my view of some, fell free to correct or to add info.

Green stuff (Kneadatite)
it orgins are - pipe puty made by PSI Polymeric Systems inc - end its real name is "Kneadatite®" end if you buy this 1 in a long tube it is for half prise propoused by GW (GW buy from PSI eny way )

Pros:
- Good for everything
- Easy to handle and to sculpt
- Clean

Cons:
- Fast drying time
- Hard to get a smooth finish
- Dosent allow errors
- Expensive

Brown Stuff
Not as flexible as GS
Can be sanded and carved when cured. That's why it's good for artificial objects, while GS is more suited for organic or soft-shaped stuff than BS.

Miliput
Pros:
- Price
- Good for weapons, coats and capes
- Can be sanded and carved when cured

Cons:
- Messy, messy, messy
- Not as flexible as GS

Fimo:
Pros:
-Price
-Easy to smooth and blend
-The new fimo air dosent need oven or microwave to harden
- Working time
- Fimo Air is very light
- Very clean
- Dosent glue to your hands

Cons:
- Needs practice
- Takes lots of time to harden (for fimo Air, all the others need to be cooked)

ProCreate:
Pros:
- something like a mix of miliput and GS or GS and BS
- can be sanded and carved when cured.
- Great color (gray) for getting the fine details
- Better texture for sculpting
- Good work time
- Designed for sculpting

Con:
- Price

Apoxie® Sculpt
http://www.avesstudio.com/index.php?pag ... 1&Itemid=4
PROs
water soluble (huge advantage IMHO)
many colors to choose from
cheaper than other putty when bought in bulk (they have sample pack called Power pack with small amounts of product in it)
easy to smooth, water on finger tips works very well
takes detail well IMHO
sands very well, can tap and drill, and I have cut/sculpt it (it is somewhat brittle when cured)
ships in two containers so no "skin" forms
shelf life is many years (I have some that is 4+ years old and it works fine)
once mixed (easy to do as it changes color, I always mix by hand for two minutes) work time is up to 3 hours
cures quickly under heat lamp; otherwise 24 hour cure time
very friendly family owned company (I talked to daughter of the owner the last time I ordered via phone)
Barton loves this stuff

CONs
some people say detail not as good as procreate (I could not tell myself)
ship overseas via US Post office - so extra shipping across the pond
if having professional rubber molds made some companies will not have experience with this putty, but is does work with high pressure/temp vulcanization

ProCreate - something like a mix of miliput and GS or GS and BS - can be sanded and carved when cured.

All these can easily be mixed with each other or with Green Stuff. Proportions will determine properties of the putty.

milliput was also produced for pipes in the first place ;)

green stuff prices - yup, GW has PSI product repackaged, it's not any different. yes, you pay double just because of the GW logo on a blister. it's not difficult to find a shop selling green stuff much cheaper than gw ;)

than what? in my shop comparable amount of gs costs 150% of PC price. on the other hand, milliput (basic version) is half as expensive as PC.

Procreate is more expensive than GreenStuff or Apoxie sculpt. About 130% to 150% more expensive than PSI GS is my experience in the USA.
I like Apoxie Sculpt because of water solubility and it is very cheap in bulk (special sale on really intense colors for $25US for 4 pounds!!!)

I had been a bit surprised with your information so I checked cmon store: gs tube is 12.99, PC is 9.99 (and they are pretty much the same weight).

My experience was at retail stores for GS vs. procreate pricing.

not sure why the prices differ so much then between US retail and online stores.
I'm getting both green stuff and PC from manufacturers directly, and PC is just cheaper.
