I did quite some sports in the past: swimming, basketball, squash, but never in a club or something, always quite casual.
Last year I started running, about 5 km three times a week. But then my knee gave some troubles
So not so long ago I finally made an old dream of mine come true:

With the bad weather I'm still training inside, with one of these:

I hope your knees are fine at the end.
Generally if you start slowly and go up in small increments, like 10% a week, you can prevent such injuries. Of course it might be that your knees had already some weakness that turned it worse.
Biking is also cool though. I have a hard tail mtb from Kona:

Last year I got hit by a car and my pedals are all broken. I quickly bought some cheap new, but they are not that good. I have to replace them again.

Oh I did this, followed a proven scheme to build up the training intensity. Also spent 150 EUR on good shoes, but to no avail.
I had an MRI made in December, there's a bit of weakened cartilage, not much to do about (except some operation probably). Good luck I don't suffer from it during my daily activities. Only when I run. So better avoid that sport
Nice bike btw.

Knee problems are the most dreaded problems with running.
You have to carefully try if it fits, that's all. Respect that you did it and found out of experience that it doesn't work for you. Most of the people use it as an excuse, like, "I don't run, 'cause I'm gonna get knee problems"

It's heavy for the knees, yes. But you can limit the risks by following a training scheme which builds up slowly, not to save money on shoes, and take a day off between training runs.
And then there's one thing I didn't do which you hear now and then: run on unpaved ground, like a forest, park, etc.
