Cryx Army 'diary'

Post by ToMaZ »

Yo!

I started on a cryx force a while ago. Purely intended for gaming. It's expanding slowly but steadily and I decided I might as well share the progress with you guys. The painting has slowed down a bit lately though as I'm on medication for my back again :(

Model I have so far

Deneghra warcaster
Iron Lich warcaster
Goreshade warcaster
Epic Deneghra warcaster
Epic Skarre warcaster

1 Seether helljack
1 Slayer helljack
2 Nightwretches bonejacks
2 Deathripper bonejacks
1 Defiler bonejack
1 Helldiver bonejack
2 Stalkers bonejacks

1 Pistol Wraith (alternative sculpt)
1 Skarlock Thrall
1 Brute Thrall

6 Bile Thralls
6 Mechanithralls
6 Bane Thralls

Gorman di wulfe
Ogrun Bokur
Doc Killingsworth

My palette was going to be all browns. Rusty metallics, lots of bonecolor and bright Necrotite green for some colorvariation.
+ some other colors that will find their way in eventually I guess.

Bases were going to be swamps with a lot of water effects. But I decided to go with something else. It took too much time to cut all the bases and plasticard into shape for infantry units etc. I tried it out on some figs though (iron lich, slayer) and I wasn't really convinced by the effect anyway.

Bases are some rocks and some slime, puddles vegetation (like on the stalker bonejack)

I have written down all the paint recipes so far, so if you like to know something, just ask!! :)

On to the WIP pics:

Goreshade

I had some fun with the sword. I wanted to see if I could get an intense and smooth red. Red seemed appropriate for a sword called 'bloodcleaver'.
I wanted to add a vampiric feel to him. Pale skin, dark eyes and dark hair. The skin turned out a bit too pinkish though. But I'll keep it this way.

Iron Lich

He was the test subject of my colors. They are a bit less saturated and not completly the same as the rest. I didn't like the original spear and made another weapon, but that one got damaged during moving. So I'm still trying to make another new one...
You can also see here what I planned to do with the bases.

Slayer Helljack

I showed this one here before. A bit converted to make him look more dynamic. He's still in the same state. No progress on him yet.
Tried out the necrotite green color here. Together with some subtle OSL effect around the eyes.
I'm pretty happy with how the bones + green turned out.
Again you can see the first idea for the bases.

My latest addition to the group. Had fun painting him this weekend. I hated the assembly part though. Glue everywhere, pins in my fingers and a lot of curses. I felt like a beginner al over again.... ahhhh the memories...

Anyway I had to keep telling me that this is supposed to turn into a gaming army, so no fancy stuff. (Or at least not too much) and that it was OK to make a mistake. This made the painting go pretty fast.
Also on this one is the type of base I'm going to go with.

I have noticed 2 moldlines btw that escaped the cleaning process...
I hope to finish him somewhere this week.

Bile Thralls

Not really a lot to see here. Wanted to try out some green armour. But I don't like it, plus it took a lot of time. The skulls turned out pretty decent for the time they took.
I still need to think of a skin recipe for there fellas.

And some pics of what's on the table right now:

You can treat the 'smell my armpit' vampire + the other background figs as a teaser (copyright by Nameless) :P

That's it for now :)

Hey, they look pretty cool for a purely gaming army. Colors are great, so are the bases. Smooth transitions. Keep 'em coming :)
Do you log how much time you spend on them?

I'm trying to paint my Acheron army, as fast as I possibly can without dramatic quality losses. I did not manage that smooth transitions, though :)

Thanks Endre :)

The stalker + base took me 2.30hrs so far. I can only paint in 30min sessions and then I have to take a break.
The rest I don't really know :)

The painting is smooth because I use washes over a lighter color I guess. And afterwards I blend in some highlights using the 2-brush technique.

Ok, I paint similarly, I also use washes, but no 2-brush stuff for speed painting :)

I also can only paint in shorter sessions. I logged what times I painted my zombies and one I did like this: 40, 45, 10, 60, 40, 20 minutes. I can usually paint only late evenings or early mornings. Rather family than health issues :)

Something I bought in the local art store. Some sea-stuff. Need to check what it says on the box when I'm home :)
Was dirt cheap too compared to the usual foilage. A really big box for 2? and a bit.

Skrit: the foilage is 'mousse de mer' I guess it's some sort of dried seaweed. I would send you some, since I have more than I'll ever use, but I doubt it'll survive the trip through the postaloffices :?

i love what you did to them and the style you chose. It seems like it's somehow inspired by Demi's dark metals and glowing parts, but I may be wrong here. Excellent work with weathering! Not really sure about the bile thralls - they may be not painted enough to allow me to tell more but I feel there's something not as cool going on as you did on the other minis.

Make them more like the previous stuff and you'll have one excellent warband!

inspired or not seems like You'll soon have better cryx than mine so I'll have to kill You
ontopic - I've been waiting whole day at work to comment this thread :)
first of all You chose great colors for the army - look really nice and eyecathing! this combined with bases used makes the final look even more eyecatching!
I LOVE paintjob on jacks - that motivates me to move my fat lazy a$$ from fast weathered painting back to diluted layers of paint;
and as for the biles - well, it's good they're still unfinished
