I so want to improve myself, but it's not as important as having fun while painting :)
I give a f :censored: about their level. I just like my works.Trophys are not needed to have some fun
Both very true statements - Dont get me wrong I also paint pieces just for fun and to play games with - but I am an artist and this is more than just a hobby for me - it is a need and a driving factor in my life. At this point I am teaching Art in a highschool - which I love :D - but I am also a gallery artist and a lifelong student of the Visual Arts and art history. It isnt the competition that is most important to me - it is the growth and understanding.

The defining moment for me as a minitaure painter came in 2000/2001 when I read an article in the White Dwarf about Joe Orteza and his crazy slaanesshi chaos army. I read that he was an Art teacher in chicago and could see that he was applying his training to his hobby. At that moment a light went on in my head and I realised that I could and should do much the same. Since then I have been working towards growth and training in this field. Joe is now my friend and I have taken lessons from many wonderful people from far and wide - and I have gotten better. The trophies are nice - dont get me wrong - but for me more than anything else they are a means to an end. The competitions bring out the best works by many people from far and wide (These France results clearly show that) and by being a part of that and of communities like chest of colors I have a chance to learn from others, participate in significant dialogue and to share.

Being a part of contests like the demons also gives me a sense of personal validation (whether I win or lose) much the same as hanging a gallery of work. To be an artist is to enter into a dialogue with the viewing community. If no one is viewing it is much harder to dialogue

The frustration, for me, comes when I cant even begin to understand. That being said I am honestly just now getting a real handle on stuff Jen Haley taught me like 3 years ago  This just means I have to work harder and longer and the truth is I AM willing to do so. I have greatly reduced my traditional artistic pursuits in favor of developing these skills and learning within this artform.

Slawek - if you want to cast one up just let me know. Id be happy to lend one of mine

Morsi - I Love your piece - the whole composition is really dyanmic and the paint is soft and subtle. Very well done. I would love to see a discussion of your basing in the painting forum if you have the chance.

Alan's piece blows me away the face is SO beautiful. The thunderbolt is great - very much a historical painter style with exagerations in the weathering. But it is the 54mm bounty hunter that really confuses me as far as techniques. I very much look forward learning about this piece and the methods behind it...... Once again I need to get back to painting (16 days till Canadian Golden Demons and I still have a ways to go.....)

@morsi - that's exactly what I wanted to do (and haveeven started), but you managed to do it better so ... I am a bit disappointed with myself now.

@tkkultist - very true. all these things matter - learning, meeting people, improving one's skills, overcoming one's limits. I was never too crazy about trohpies, and I am afraid I will never by. And I will probably win no demons ;)

THX tkkultist for your words of wisdom. As to your proposition I wil take one of yours but my friend already have one so I can borrow from him :D

As to the fascination of painting Im proud to have some friends in local painters society . People from COC like Mahon aka Lazy Git, Ana, Ilusiorip (for me he is Stefan), People from Perfectus Art Studio Milosz, Pająk.Invidual painters like Alek. Profi sculptors as Wojtek (Black Tree)/
I just talk here about people who learn me something by painting together etc

Those people spend their time tolearn me something and I truly appreciated that. Whats more interesting I observed that I actually can learn or influence them too. We actually makes us better by "working" together

Its really happy discovery...

So remember share your knowledge and it will back to you later with percent....
