no Trov, you're not guilty. you never said your only/primary motivation is meeting people and award-hunting is not important. what I don't like is the hypocrisy of people who say they don't care for awards and only care for the social aspect, but then don't go to an event if the award is of minor importance.

It was hypocrisy I didn't like, not trying to win anything :)

haha Mahon you should move more around art world, everyone lies about their real motivations

Its trendy for people to say they dont care about slayers or prizes or fame and glory... even if its that what motivates them.
Its the least of my concerns here, because now everyone can participate on gamesday event... soon that will be gone and maybe im just pessimist about this but i cant see a community soooo small with soooo few events losing his bigger worlwide comp and think it will be better...

yes, but points 1-2 related to my previous statements, not yours.
the death of gamesdays is a big hole in many countries that only have gamesday as events :(
UK, USA, Germany, France, Spain, Italy - all those countries have other big events.
Poland - we didn't have a games day, only a golden demon. Golden Demon was part of a big con called Polcon. Noone was discontent that it was not a separate event.
I have no problems if any company organizes painting events for their range...
me too. What I think is wrong, is that GD is more important in Europe than general painting competition.
Reaper holds ReaperCons once or even twice per year, they have a painting competition there limited to their minis, masters category is always a showcase of great skills (Schubert, Reimer and many other well known artists). I can' imagine though that it is more important contest than GenCon.
again how can a recently painting competition compete side by side with the most tradicional and old painting comp in mini world?
there are competitions for historic modellers (accepting fantasy mini though) which are probably older than GDs.
thats never a good thing to lose...
never said that. I said it wouldn't be SAD or TERRIBLE to me. I didn't say I'd be happy with GDs cancelled.

I think I've already had enough of it, Navarro. Really, and maybe it's why I hate hypocrisy so much.

If we all admit there's nothing wrong in competing for awards, why the heck do all these people lie it's not important to them. If it's a prime motivator for some - that's Ok. For me it is not, but I don't mind if someone's mileage varies....

I myself would prefer to have a large meeting of hobbyists here once per year than a GD. Of course if I had any choice...

Mate I was expressing my opinion not analizing yours, i never said you told that okidoki? :)

I do hope your right but somehow i fail to believe this will help in anyway the boost of other comps, i think we are going to lose lots of painters because of this...

Mahon I totally agree with you, people should be frontal about their motivations but has we know its becoming a rarity these days... your not more fed up of this than me i asure ya^^

I'm a little unclear here. Are they turning games days into just a painting event? Or are they getting rid of some of them or what? This is a tough one either way. On one hand, losing out on a major hobby event is a big deal, on the other, something will almost always rise to take the place of those that fall. If they are just siphoning the Games Day part off of the Golden Demons, I honestly dont see what the big deal is. There is just as much of a community that gathers for painting at a competition as there is at a huge "hobby" event. In fact I'd say based on my experiences here in the USA (might be different in Europe) that having the Demons separate from Games Day would be a good thing. Games Days tend to be huge, intimidating, loud and decidedly not focused on painting. I've never felt so disconnected from the crowd then at a GD. I wasnt there to play, I wasnt there to root for Games Workshop like the fanboys, and oh my god I was a girl. I got some of the most bizzarre, why are you here looks... But I didnt get that among the painters, just the players. The painters for the most part had their own community within and mostly separate from that. We hung out, we talked shop and we BSed, and for the most part we hung out. That isnt going to change if you strip it down to just a painting contest. And you know what? If it does, then it's the community's responsibility to take up the mantle. We've worked hard to turn GenCon into a major alternative to the Golden Demons. It can be done it just takes dedication on the part of an active group of people.

I have my issues with GW, but I appreciate that they attract the interest of people to the hobby that might otherwise not find it. I dont know what losing games days would be likely to do in terms of an overall impact on the hobby, but I can certainly respect that need for a gaming convention where you can play against people you dont know at home and build up a community of friends and rivals. Here I think that slack would be picked up by the major conventions, and those people who would normally just go to games day would be introduced to a much greater diversity of games and figures.

I don't quite agree with your point Noel. Of course it would be better to organise strictly painting events. It would be better for the painters. But GD events are about hobby in general. The Golden Demon painting competition allows outsiers out of somewhat closed painting communities to watch some great paintjobs, among other related things. What's more as I have organised some events on my own I would guess that also the financial aspect of this is significant here. How many people are there at GD to participate in painting events? And how many more come to watch, play, talk about games etc? Even if it's non-profit party it sure is easier for GW to organise a combined event in terms of promotion costs which are involved.
Do not underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers...

I think a lot of it is in what you're looking for. If you're looking to inspire the masses absolutely it's better to have it in a setting that will draw more then just the painters. If you're looking for a painters community to gather and converse, then not having to deal with the sheer over whealmingly intense nature of a Games Day is in my opinion a plus. Mind you I think having it in a convention that is a bit less militarily GW is a good thing even if it's a GW only contest. Draws from a wider pool.

Wow, big discussion! ;)

Me, it's simple. I would be very sad to see the Golden Demons go!
