some quotes:
=][= THE GOLDEN BOLTER PAINTING COMPETITION =][=

10 years have passed since the B&C has first set foot on the internet stage and we felt it was time to up the ante on the bog-standard internet painting contests that you've seen from us in the last decade. With that in mind we have set out and designed "The Golden Bolter" painting contest. With our unique niche focus of power armor armies we felt a more familiar Golden Demon type setting to a contest (complete with resin cast trophies) was more appropriate than yet another "pick this miniature and paint it" contest that you see everywhere anymore.

We want to continue the tradition of bringing you the best contests, the best prizes and the best sponsors for the next 10 years!

GENERAL RULES and GUIDELINES

GOLDEN BOLTER 2010 COMPETITOR'S GUIDELINES
The inaugural Golden Bolter will take place in February 2010. In all cases, the judges will be looking for well painted and well presented models. In addition, they will look at how well the model or models fit in with the published concept of the 40k background. That isn't to say that they won't reward innovation and creativity, but this must be demonstrated within the spirit of the 40k Universe.

All entries must be Citadel miniatures, Forge World models or Imperial Armour vehicles. Conversions in all categories are welcome! One entry per category.

Overall the rules should seem very familiar to those entering as they are basically the Golden Demon rules with a little tweaking.

CATEGORIES
For the inaugural event there will be three (3) categories: Single mini, squad, large model/vehicle.

Depending on turn out we may have more/different categories in the future.

Please note each category has a specific list of acceptable units for the contest. As the B&C is a Power Armor forum we are limiting the entries to power armor units:
as detailed here.

BASES
When describing what bases you may use we have used the term, “appropriate gaming base” in some instances. The intention here is to allow a little flexibility whilst keeping to the spirit of the competition. However, please note that each category does have size limits as detailed in their specific sections in terms of overall base size. Please keep in mind that 40k is not a square-base game so in all instances round bases are the norm (pill bases being the exception for bikes/attack bikes).

SCENIC DISPLAY BASES
Many people like to mount their models upon large scenic display bases or plinths. However for the purpose of this contest we only want to see miniatures on their gaming bases. Models in the Vehicle/Large model category should be mounted on appropriate gaming bases where applicable, attack bikes can also be mounted on bases. Vehicles should not be mounted on a scenic display (we just want the vehicle for this).

JUDGES DECISIONS
In all cases the judges' decisions are final. The judges are all former Golden Demon and Slayer Sword winners and as such are well aware of what to look for in a winning entry. They reserve the right to move models into a different category if it is entered inappropriately, or to disqualify a model if they feel it breaches the rules of the competition. We will not enter into any discussion about the judges' decisions.

Judges decisions will determine 1st through 3rd place in all categories and then the overall winner of the Golden Bolter. However forum members will also be voting on a "People's Choice" award for each category as well.

You can only enter once in each category, and all entries to the Golden Bolter must be painted Citadel models, Forge World models or conversions based thereon.

CONVERSIONS
We welcome conversions (including full sculpts) based upon the 40k Universe in all appropriate categories, but these should be consistent with the atmosphere of the 40k Universe. Furthermore, please do not use any real-world references or references to other non-Games Workshop fictional worlds in your entries. Overall, the judges will be looking for well-painted models that adhere to the imagery and ethos of the worlds represented in settings of Warhammer 40,000. All single miniatures must be mounted on the appropriate gaming bases. We reserve the right to refuse entry to the competition.

GUIDELINES FOR ENTRIES
Obviously since this is an internet forum you won't be "handing in" your mini as you would at the Golden Demons or Adepticon. All models should be the work of a single hobbyist and you must be a registered member of the Bolter and Chainsword to enter. All work on models entered into the Golden Bolter including but not limited to painting, modeling, converting, after-market sculpting must be performed entirely by the entrant. Neither models obtained from someone else in any state of completion nor collaborative efforts may be entered. Anyone found violating this rule will be immediately disqualified from entering future competitions and possibly banned from the site all together. The one exception to this rule is resin bases. As there are many after-market base making companies out there, it is okay for your base to produced by a base making company.

As we know that folks sometimes like to chronicle their Golden Demon entries from start to finish, you are allowed to do so with your entries to the Golden Bolters. Whether here at the B&C or elsewhere. This will have no effect on the judges decisions.

As with past B&C contest this means do not enter your Golden Demon model from prior years or any other local, international or online contest.

Since the judges have to rely on photographs to determine the winners, please do not do any photo manipulation to your pictures.

THE CATEGORIES

As this is the inaugural event we are starting with just a few categories. The level of participation and feed back will determine if we have more of different categories next time around.

As this is the Bolter and Chainsword we do things power armor style here. This means not every unit in every power armor codex will be allowed. To help avoid confusion we have posted a list in each category of acceptable units/model types that can be used. If you don't see it in the list then you can't use it.

CATEGORY 1 - SINGLE MINI

Any single human-sized miniature mounted on an appropriately sized gaming base. Appropriately sized gaming bases for this category are round bases, no larger than 40mm.

This category includes Terminators. Note that bike-mounted character models must be entered in the Vehicle category.

Models must be game legal and meet the requirements as designated in the General Guidelines

DIY Chapters/Legions/Renegades/etc. are of course allowed, the Codex list is just there to show people which books we consider to be "game legal" right now. You do not have to do Black Templar, Space Wolves, Ultras and so on

The following is a list of acceptable units that can post a single miniature from for this category:
Codex Space Marines 5th Edition: Any named Character or generic Characters model (Chapter Master, Captain, Chaplain, Librarian, Techmarine or Master of the Forge (no servitors for those last two) ). This includes Chronus and Kor'sarro Khan, however they must be in their "on foot" disposition obviously.
Codex Space Marines 5th Edition: Individual model from these squad types - Honour Guard, Command squad, Tactical squad, Assault squad, Devestator squad, Vanguard squad, Sternguard squad, Terminator Squad, Scout squad or Legion of the Damned squad.
Codex Space Wolves 5th Edition: Any named character excluding Bjorn the Felhanded and Canis Wolfborn. Generic SW characters (Wolf Lord, Iron Priest, Rune Priest, Wolf Priest).
Codex Space Wolves 5th Edition: Individual models from the following squad types: Blood Claw, Grey Hunters, Wolf scouts, Long Fangs, Lone Wolves, Wolf Guard and Skyclaw Assault Pack.
Codex Chaos Space Marines 4th Edition: Any named character or generic character from the following (Chaos Lord, Chaos Sorceror).
Codex Chaos Space Marines 4th Edition: Individual models from the following squad types: Chosen, Chaos Terminators, Chaos Space Marines, Berzerkers, Thousand Sons, Noise Marines, Plague Marines, Raptors, Havocs and Obliterators.
Codex Black Templar 4th Edition: Named Characters, generic characters (Commander, Emperor's Champion, Chaplain, Techmarine).
Codex Black Templar 4th Edition: Individual models from the following squad types: Terminator Command, Command, Terminator, Terminator Assault, Crusade, Sword Brethren and Assault squads.
Codex Dark Angels 4th Edition: Named Characers (excluding Sammael) and generic characters (Interrogator Chaplain, Chaplain, Company Master, Librarian, Techmarine).
Codex Dark Angels 4th Edition: Individual models from the following squad types: Command, Deathwing Terminators, Veteran, Scout, Tactical, Assault, Devestator
Codex Blood Angels 4th Edition (PDF): Named Characters and generic characters (Company Captain, Chaplain, Librarian, Techmarine).
Codex Blood Angels 4th Edition (PDF): Individual models from the following squad types: Honour Guard, Death Company, Terminator, Veteran Assault, Scout, Assault, Tactical and Devestator squads.
Codex Witch Hunters 3rd Edition: Adepta Sororitas Heroine and Saint Celestine.
Codex Witch Hunters 3rd Edition: Individual models from the following squad types: Celestian, Sisters Repentia, Battle Sisters, Seraphim, Dominion and Retributor squads.
Codex Daemon Hunters 3rd Edition: Brother Captain Stern, Grey Knight Hero.
Codex Daemon Hunters 3rd Edition: Individual models from the following squad types: Grey Knight Terminator, Grey Knights, and Purgation squads.
Forge World Models: Lord Zhufgor, Commander Culln (since FW addon kits fit in with other squads listed above we are only listing the specific characters from FW publications that don't appear in the rule books otherwise).

**PLEASE NOTE: Your single mini entry cannot be part of your squad entry!! **

CATEGORY 2 - SQUAD

This category is for a squad of five or more models. The squad members must be mounted on appropriate gaming bases. Appropriate gaming bases for this category are rounds bases no larger than 40mm.

All squads must be “legal” in game terms. Judges will be looking for units that best exemplify the qualities and character of the army they represent.

Models must be game legal and meet the requirements as designated in the General Guidelines

The following is a list of acceptable squads for this category:

Codex Space Marines 5th Edition: Honour Guard, Command squad, Tactical squad, Assault squad, Devestator squad, Vanguard squad, Sternguard squad, Terminator Squad, Scout squad or Legion of the Damned squad.
Codex Space Wolves 5th Edition: Blood Claw, Grey Hunters, Wolf scouts, Long Fangs, Lone Wolves, Wolf Guard and Skyclaw Assault Pack.
Codex Chaos Space Marines 4th Edition: Chosen, Chaos Terminators, Chaos Space Marines, Berzerkers, Thousand Sons, Noise Marines, Plague Marines, Raptors, Havocs and Obliterators.
Codex Black Templar 4th Edition: Terminator Command, Command, Terminator, Terminator Assault, Crusade, Sword Brethren and Assault squads.
Codex Dark Angels 4th Edition: Command, Deathwing Terminators, Veteran, Scout, Tactical, Assault, Devestator

Codex Daemon Hunters 3rd Edition: Grey Knight Terminator, Grey Knights, and Purgation squads.

CATEGORY 3 - LARGE MODEL/VEHICLE

This category is open to single vehicles, bikes and attack bikes (includes jet bikes) and dreadnoughts.

Models in the Vehicle/Large model category should be mounted on appropriate gaming bases where applicable, attack bikes can also be mounted on bases. Vehicles should not be mounted on a scenic display (we just want the vehicle for this). Appropriate gaming bases would be round or pill bases. No larger than 60mm for rounds and no larger than 60x100 for pill bases (yes this means 75x40 pill bases are acceptable).

The vehicle/large model must be game legal and meet the requirements as designated in the General Guidelines

The following is a list of acceptable vehicles and walkers for this category:
Dreadnoughts - all variants including named Dreadnoughts and FW variants.
Rhino - all variants including FW.
Predator - all variants including FW.
Whirlwind - all variants including FW.
Land Raider - all variants including FW.
Individual Bike mounted Marine or attack bike. This includes Sammael on jetbike and Kor'sarro Khan in a mounted form.

Additionally, randomly selected entries will receive:
$50 GC from Greenfield Games

A random entry as selected by the fine folks at Wayland Games: will receive "a special prize".

Other random entries will receive B&C swag of various types.

* A note in regards to the Gift Certifcates being given away as prizes. Some shops offer free shipping and some don't. Please understand that if one of the stores (such as Warstore) does not offer free shipping then the cost of shipping comes out of your GC as well. So if you win a $50 GC and buy a $50 item and have $10 in shipping fees then you need to pay that $10.

Our sponsors have always been fantastic in their service and quality of prizes over the past 10 years and frankly they don't deserve the abuse some people heap on them because of an assumption that all shipping is free.

You can see minis which has taken part in the competition.

But IMO the painting level is very low. I thought it will be much higher. I've even started painting marine for the competition but had no time to finish it :/

I was looking through the single mini category and there are about 2 which are really good but in general i agree with przemo. Still you got to remember B&C are more a gaming community than painting (at least in my eyes they are anyway) but they do have some talented painters on that site.
