Early Ork Warboss WIP

Post by ToMaZ »

Hi,

Demi asked for some pics of my ork I started painting yesterday... and here are some :) The pics are not good. Somehow I can't get the settings of my camera right. The problem is it mostly shows the lightest and darkest colours and the pics always come out too dark.

The teeth on the pics are just awfull.I wanted to make them dirty (never seen an ork with clean teeth) I thought they looked good but appareantly not. I have to take a look at them again.

Oh 1 further remark... That stupid Ork fell over while I took the pics, and now a tooth and his ear is a bit chipped. I corrected it, but it still shows a bit. Sorry for that.
I would have corrected it further and showed the pics after I corrected it, if it didn't took me so much effort to get some decent pics with that bloody camera!! :x

Now tell what looks good and what looks bad and how to improve it :D The metallics look better on this one than on the other, no?

Tomaz, I have been painting a bunch of space orks and goblins lately, I thought I'd share my experiences.

If you want dirty teeth, don't get the dirt effect with grainy paint. I also tried to achieve a dirty effect for my orks but the best way to do it is with the colours, not the technique. Try a bonewhite colour as final highlight and start off with a darker brown. A dark edge on a tooth is usually enough to give it a dirty appearance.

I like the colours alot. If your entire figure is gonna be this colourful, it will be very cool ! however the tongue is not good in this picture imho. It takes attention away from the splendid glass eye and also makes the teeth and lips dissapear a little bit. Try and give it a dark colour, I think it will be much better.

The skin is very good, but could use another highlight. The flat green as final highlight just doesn't cut it. I think you need an additional highlight with green + light brown/bonewhite ( no pure white ! ) on the cheeks, and around the mouth, where the skin is the tightest. Same goes for the purple on the lip.

Keep uis updated ! this looks very promising.

Looks great so far ToMaZ, I like the way the bionic eye and metallics turned out!

thanks for the kind words :) and thanks for the advice Mordred! I'm sure to use it!

I'm facing a problem right now with the model. I'm not sure what to use as main colour. I've finished the metallics on his upper body and now I can't decide what colour to use on his mega armour. I don't want to paint the whole armour in metallics and first I wanted to use a filthy dark brown colour. But now I'm not sure anymore.

Any other suggestions?

Maybe do the armour red with places where the metal comes through cause of the damage. (or the paint has chipped off...)

Like this one from Matt Parkes:

Nice head, I like it. I agree with Mordred though, the tongue is a bit too vivid. The skintone is nice, the armour plate could get a bit more shade. The teeth are a bit rough, but the color is nice.

The tubes might need a highlight too, they seem quite bright, but it might only be the photo and lighting, so I thought, I mention it. :)
