AoM's new WIP for local contest LADYEYES, KEEP OUT!!!!

Post by Angel_of_Menoth »

Tanya knows she's not supposed to come looking in this post because she's judging the competition. Since I can't show her the model as I work on it, I'm going to try showing it to you guys. I'm still working on getting the lighting right for shooting pics with my new camera, so some of these shots might not be as useful as they could be.

The contest is single-figure contest for our LGS. Models must be purchased during May, and they are due in by the 31st. I've been painting my Menoth stuff and a commission Circle army lately, so I decided to buy a model I wouldn't usually paint. This is Ivar Silverfist, Dwarf Priest from Reaper's Warlord game.

I've built a large base that will have a waterfall. I'll get pics of the base in the next few days.

Here are some of the first pics. I'm doing this model entirely with P3 paints. I finally got the second half of the line, and I am even more impressed than before. The greens on this model are going to be so much fun to work with (base color only, so far). I have already touched up the black spots on the left side of the face, I just didn't want to shoot some extra pics. I'm going to be making the beard whiter. This is just 2 layers and a wash (Greatcoat Grey base, Frostbite highlighting, Greatcoat wash).

nice skintone. well done. even though I would add a thin glaze of some "strange" color in shadows - maybe purple, brown, or even green ;)

The rest looks like basecolors for now, so I'll wait with commenting on it...

---> Nameless: Reaper's, I was tired last night at 1:00 am.

I like the idea of doing a thin purple wash for his skin, Mahon. I'll try that out.

I'm going to spray him with matte sealer tonight when i get home from work. That way I can protect the skin I have in case I end up not liking the purple wash. I was originally planning on painting the greens tonight, but I think that I'll be better served working on the chainmail. There are more small areas of chainmail that are going to make painting messy if I try to do them later.

More pics to come tonight.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Monday Night Update

Post by Angel_of_Menoth »

Well, I got a bit done, but I'm not entirely happy with the golds. I think the ink wash I used ended up giving things too much of a red tone. Maybe I'll like it tomorrow. It looks ok, I just don't know if it's the color I want. The chainmail came out a bit better. I think I'll add a thin wash of blue ink tomorrow (but not enough to actually change the color too much).

What can I do to make the beard look better? It looks good enough to be a nice gaming model, but this is a contest piece. Maybe I'll have to wait until i take my hair class at Gen Con.

I tried a different lighting set up tonight. The model isn't as washed out as last night, but you can't see the eyes anymore because of the shadows. I guess I'll bother my professional photographer friend about it later this week. Here are some new shots. (Yes, I know I got gold on the green. I'm going to redo the green basecoat.)

as for gold parts I think there should be bigger contrast, I mean: even darker around rivers and brighter on surfaces wrere light spots directly; green clother look nice but still like basesoated - waiting to see the washes You mentioned about (brown? purple? )

I'd suggest a wash on the armour parts too. Also the beard could use some more work. Make it a bit darker where the beard starts. That way it will come out a bit more...

ok, so darker where the beard meets his face. add a purple wash to his shin, and use a darker wash on the gold armor (sticking to areas in shadow). I think I can make that work.

Demi, I'm saving the greens for last for easy clean up while I do the metallics. Also, I've done a lot of green lately, so I'm used to building up my highlights. (my High Reclaimer will be showing up here soon)
